Sustainable Mining Project

50 points

Purpose: The earth is full of rich materials (metals, gemstones, fossil fuels…) that are available to be harvested/mined.  However, harvesting and/or mining and then purification of these materials has caused numerous, negative environmental effects.  If we wish to continue to harvest and use these rich resources, new techniques which reduce the environmental impacts of harvesting/mining and purification need to be developed and promoted.  You will select one material and discuss the traditional and more sustainable methods for its harvesting/mining and purification.

You will create a digital slide show to present these methods to your classmates.  The requirements for what must be included in the slide show are listed below.

0 1 2 3 4 5
Description of material(10 points- points x 2)

-From what is the material made

-How is the material made (what geological processes occurred to make it)

-How is the material used

-Where can the material be found (geologically and geographically
